Background

Ra'am, the political arm of the southern Islamic Movement, ran within the Joint List from 2015 to 2020 and left before the 2021 election (IDI, https://en.idi.org.il/israeli-elections-and-parties/parties/...). In 2021 it became the first Arab party in decades to join a governing coalition, under Bennett and Lapid (Arab News, 2026-08-31). In December 2025 Abbas said the party would separate from its religious council and become 'completely civic', and denied it is part of the Muslim Brotherhood (Times of Israel, https://www.timesofisrael.com/raam-leader-says-party-will-cu...). On 27 July 2026 he announced the separation from the Islamic Movement and its Shura Council was complete for political decisions and candidate selection (Haaretz, 2026-07-27), and in January 2026 the party opened its slate to Jewish candidates (Times of Israel). The 28th party conference in Tayibe on 22 August 2026, with 1,050 delegates, chose the top five and Abbas said 'The state of Palestine exists and stands, and most of the world recognizes it, except for the US and Israel' (JPost, 2026-08-22). On 31 August Abbas and Segalovitz announced a joint run in Nazareth (JPost; Ynet).
