Background

After Labor fell to 4 seats and Meretz failed the threshold in 2022, Merav Michaeli stepped down and Yair Golan won the Labor leadership in May 2024 with 95 percent, promising to unite the left (Times of Israel, https://www.timesofisrael.com/yair-golan-wins-landslide-vict...). Labor and Meretz agreed in June to July 2024 to form The Democrats, reserving slots for former Meretz members (JPost, article-810075). In September 2025 Golan joined Lapid, Liberman and Eisenkot in a 'permanent forum' of opposition leaders (Times of Israel). On 5 May 2026 Golan called on the Zionist opposition to declare Ra'am a legitimate coalition partner (Times of Israel, 2026-05-05). The party held digital primaries on 20 July 2026 and launched its campaign at Rabin Square on 25 July, pledging a state commission of inquiry, repeal of the judicial overhaul legislation and a bar on indicted candidates for prime minister (Ynet, 2026-07-25).
